  • Walk me through your resume

  • Tell me something about yourself that’s not on your resume

  • How would you describe yourself?

Rational and Importance:

The "Tell me about yourself" question often serves as an icebreaker, allowing the candidate to establish rapport with the interviewers and set the tone for the rest of the conversation. Moreover, this question enables interviewers to gain insight into the candidate's communication skills, self-awareness, and ability to highlight relevant experiences. A well-structured and engaging response can leave a positive first impression and increase the candidate's chances of success throughout the interview.

Things to Consider:

When responding to this question, consider the ‘Past-Present-Passive-Personality-Future-Fit' (4Ps +2 Fs) formula to provide a comprehensive yet concise answer:

  • Past: Begin with a brief overview of your academic and professional background, focusing on key experiences that led you to pursue a career in medicine. Highlight relevant achievements and experiences that shaped your interest in your chosen specialty.

  • Present and Passion: Discuss your current status, such as your medical school education, any specific rotations or clinical experiences you've undertaken, or Step 3 preparation. Stay concise and relevant, emphasizing how these present activities are further preparing you for your desired residency program. Mention about any particular areas of medicine you're passionate about. Mention any research or volunteer work related to your field of interest.

  • Personality: Offer insights into your qualities and strengths as a physician. For example, highlight your dedication, compassion, problem-solving skills, and ability to work effectively in teams. Provide examples that demonstrate your commitment to patient care and personal growth. Discuss your personality traits and how they have evolved throughout your experiences. For instance, elaborate on how past challenges have made you better at time management or helped you develop leadership qualities. Smoothly blend your past, present, and personality to present a coherent and well-rounded profile.

  • Future and Fit: Convey your aspirations and long-term career goals. Articulate your reasons for pursuing a residency in this particular program and how it fits with your professional vision. Demonstrate your understanding of the program's unique offerings and how they can contribute to your growth as a physician. This insight can also impact your ranking decisions, showing program faculty your genuine interest and enthusiasm.

Common Mistakes:

  • Providing a lengthy autobiography rather than a concise and relevant response.

  • Focusing too much on personal life details rather than professional achievements.

  • Rambling or jumping between unrelated topics, making it hard for the interviewers to follow your narrative.

  • Not tailoring the response to the specific specialty or program you're interviewing for.

  • Failing to mention key experiences or achievements that would be valuable in highlighting your suitability for the residency.
